Sept. 14 (Wednesday) From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Beginning Again — a program for caregivers and those who have experienced the loss of a loved one — meets on the second Wednesday pf each month at 5106 N. Harrison. For more information or to RSVP, call (405) 695-5006 or (405) 312-1771.

Sept. 14-17 (Now through Saturday) Tecumseh’s city-wide event Frontier Days is free to attend. There will be live music, vendors, food trucks, a parade, a pageant, gospel singing and a kid’s zone with plenty to do for all. Everyone is invited to come out and celebrate the historic land run from 1891 that helped form the town of Tecumseh. This year, the Frontier Days Pageant was Sept. 11, the Gospel Sing Sept. 15 and then Sept. 17 the all-day event kicks off with a 5K/1 Mile Fun Run/Walk and a pancake breakfast hosted by the local American Legion. At 10 a.m. on the 17th, the parade starts. After the parade, there are several events planned such as a pet show, beard/ mustache competition, watermelon eating contest and constant entertainment from two stages. There is a car show featuring vehicles of all makes and models. There will also be a free kid’s zone and free carriage rides and a dunk tank. At 6 p.m., festivities continue at Slick Humphrey’s Park with a concert — Battle of the Bands style. Food trucks will be available. For more information, visit https://frontierdaysok. com/index.php.

Sept. 15 (Thursday) At 4 p.m. the Shawnee Beautification, Parks and Recreation Committee is having a special call meeting in the City Hall Chambers at 16 W. 9th St. to discuss committee goals.

Beginning at 7 p.m., Third Thursday poetry night is being hosted at the Lunch Box, at 217 E. Main, featuring Sly Alley. Alley’s work has appeared in The Muse, Dragon Poet Review and included in the anthology Ain’t Gonna Be Treated This Way (Village Books Press, 2017). His debut collection of poems titled Strong Medicine (Village Books Press, 2016) won the 2017 Oklahoma Book Award for poetry. He writes on a vintage Royal typewriter in a fortified shack in Tecumseh.

Following his reading, open mike will give those attending the option of reading their own or others’ work.

The Lunch Box will open at 6 p.m. for those who want to order a meal.

Community Market of Pottawatomie County is hosting its annual Harvest Moon dinner.

Sept. 16 (Friday) From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Arts @317 will host its September Block pARTy event.

The featured artist is John May, who makes rings, bells, tooth fairy boxes, and several other items from coins. He will demonstrate how he makes some of his items, as well as have his work for sale. More things, including music and games, will be going on outside under the awning as weather permits.

BancFirst Shawnee, Tecumseh, and McLoud want to invest in area school-sponsored organizations, groups, and teams. Applications are being accepted for potential donations of $250 or $500 as part of the Pottawatomie County Public School donation program.

Sept. 17 (Saturday) At 10 a.m. Gateway to Prevention and Recovery will be hosting its second Walk for Recovery event. All are welcome to participate to honor themselves, loved ones and/or community members.

The event will be held on the museum grounds of the Paul and Ann Milburn Center, just north of the Santa Fe Depot.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the Shawnee Public Library is hosting a Styrofoam recycle event. Bring clean foam food containers, drinking cups, and packing materials to the event to have them densified and recycled into usable plastic. Foam takes 500 years or more to begin to degrade in landfills. The Churches Caring for Creation coalition has partnered with Pioneer Library System to hold Foam Recycling events at several branches across the system. If it rains, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept.

24. The next quarterly event in Shawnee will be held Saturday, Jan.

7, to allow recycling after the holiday season.

Sept. 19 (Monday) Pott. County Retired Educators Assoc will meet at 10:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall, St.

Beard. The program will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tiffany Nagel-Monroe, executive director of St. Paul Seminary, OCU.

Shawnee City Commission meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall Chambers, at the corner of Broadway and 9th Street.

Sept. 19-Dec. 12 (Mondays) An informal, in-depth study of the Gospel of John will be offered for adults Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., running through Dec. 12. Emphasis will be placed on the purpose of John’s writing and the conceptual word pictures he uses to describe Christ on earth. The teachings of Christ will be studied in context of their original settings, with lasting messages for today. The instructor is Cliff Craig, recently retired from over 40 years of teaching Bible in churches and colleges. The study is free to all and will meet at Northridge Church of Christ, 1001 E MacArthur. Sept. 22 (Thursday) From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pottawatomie County Health Department, 1904 S.

Gordon Cooper Drive, in Shawnee, there will be a booster seat distribution event. The child, parent or legal guardian of the child, and vehicle must be present to receive a seat. Bring proof of government assistance, like WIC/ SNAP/ SoonerCare.For more information, call (405) 273-2157.

From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., between 9th and Main on Bell downtown, Community Renewal, in partnership with the City of Shawnee, will host this month’s Downtown Block Party, a free, family-friendly event.

Featuring live music, food trucks, retail vendors, free kids activities, adult beverages and, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Wesley United Methodist Church, at 302 E. Independence in Shawnee, will have its Free Clothes Closet, which is accessible at the pavilion behind the church.

Sept. 24 (Saturday) Starting at 9 a.m. is the Earlsboro Fun Run at Earlsboro Park.

Sept. 26-Oct. 2 (Monday through Sunday) Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 is National Diaper Need Awareness Week.

Legacy Parenting Center, at 126 S. Center, is raising awareness and seeking donations and volunteers to help the center distribute needed items. To donate or learn more about Legacy Parenting, visit legacyshawnee.com.

Oct. 6-8 (Thursday through Saturday) Friends of the Library is anticipating its upcoming fall book sale Oct. 6-8. On the first day, the Members-Only sale will be from 5-7 p.m. (on the 6th).

Memberships are also available at the door.

The sale then opens to the public from 7-8:30 p.m. that same evening.

On Oct. 7, hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

And on Oct. 8, the sale will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Also a giveaway to teachers will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the 8th.

Paper bags are 50 cents each, and hardbacks are $1. Books also will be sold for $5 per bag with the bags provided.

Oct. 19 (Wednesday) From 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Center, at 804 S. Park, there is a Health Fair event.

Oct. 28 From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Absentee Shawnee Housing Authority, at 107 N. Kimberly Ave., Sponsors Community Renewal and Indian Child Welfare are hosting a Trunk or Treat event. Also, residents can email costume photos to enter a costume contest by Oct. 28 to twallace@ashousingauthority. com. Be sure to send photo/name/ age group. The contest will have first, second and third place prizes for 0-5 year olds; 6 to 12 year olds; and 12-18 year olds. Winners will be announced Nov. 4.

Oct. 29 (Saturday) From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brown Derby, 1830 N. Kickapoo, in Shawnee, residents are invited to Cruise the Poo October, a Trunk or Treat event where attendees can view classic cars and collect candy.
