Bowl game: no time like now

College football offers a whole set of gifts and bowls this season

After nearly half of the bowl games were cancelled last year, stakeholders in the college football playoffs look forward to spending record amounts in the next few weeks as part of their annual gift-giving tradition.

Our 16th annual review of the gift packages provided to players by the committee that operates 43 I-Bowl games (including next month’s national championship) shows that these organizations will provide contestants with more than $6 million in electronics, watches, and other products. The items are in their respective games.

The most common way to distribute these gifts is to arrange online or face-to-face "gift sets." According to NCAA rules, each school can provide up to 125 game participants with orders and allow the purchase of items, or items, with a total value of not more than 550 per person Dollar. Additional packages can and are usually purchased by the school. 24 committees will host such events this season.

The remaining committees follow the same NCAA guidelines, but choose to arrange and display packages themselves instead of providing kits.

Suppliers such as Fossil (watches) and Maui Jim (sunglasses) provide staff to customize items suitable for each player.

Jon Cooperstein introduced the gift suite concept at the Orange Bowl in 2008. He said that before the pandemic, the committee liked to hold events at the host hotel, the unique location of the host city, or on campus. After last year's gift giving event was almost 100% online, most committees provided schools with options. Cooperstein worked with 27 committees this year, including the National Championship.

Game sponsors themselves rarely participate in the gift-giving process.

This will be Sony’s fifth year title sponsorship of the Carnival Bowl, and the company will provide the committee with its hard-to-find Sony PS5. In addition, Virginia and SMU players in Fenway Sports Management's inaugural Mustard Bowl will receive a Dopp kit provided by Boston Red Sox sponsor LLBean. As part of Kellogg's title sponsorship starting in 2019, a box of icing flakes will be distributed during the Sun Bowl pre-match celebration.

The 18 stadiums hosting the bowl games have naming rights agreements, but none of these partners provide gifts. The representatives of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl and the organizers of the National Championship this season have maintained the tradition of not disclosing the contents of their respective packages.

Other outstanding items this year:

■ Eastern Michigan and free agents will choose one of eight colors of YoBow massage pistols from the LendingTree Bowl gift set. Depending on the color chosen by the player, the company will donate to one or two of the 15 charities. With guaranteed prices, Duke’s Mayo and Barstool Sports Arizona bowls will also distribute massagers.

■ EasyPost Hawai'i Bowl has worked with Honolulu-based Tori Richard for 12 years and will provide players in Memphis and Hawaii with the company's Kahala brand jerseys.

■ The bowl package that debuted this year is a personalized character of Action Face. Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl (Missouri Army) and Servpro First Responder Bowl (Louisville Air Force) players will take headshots and choose a football pose, and then a company of six former Hasbro and Activision employees will use 3D printers Create a personalized doll for each player.
